In this assignment, you will be considering controversial interventions that, while some may have evidence supporting them, are not behavior analytic in nature and therefore, cannot be recommended by a BCBA.
Numerous controversial treatments are promoted for individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Almost all behavior analysts agree that these treatments lack sufficient empirical support. Some of these treatments include facilitated communication, sensory integration, hyperbaric oxygen chambers, elimination diets, chelation therapy, floortime, and more.
For this assignment, you will be given specific information on the controversial treatment you will be discussing. The procedure you will discuss is posted in the announcements section. You cannot choose your own procedure.
You will be writing about facilitated communication, a controversial treatment sometimes used with individuals with ASD. This is your assigned topic, and you must write about facilitated communication only. Any submissions on a different topic will automatically receive a 0 with no opportunity to resubmit.

Conduct a search for information on the controversial treatment posted in the announcements. Describe the controversial treatment using information from at least one reputable source.
Discuss at least one pro statement that supports the use of the treatment. These may come from experts, therapists, parents, or others. Also, discuss at least one con statement that opposes or refutes the treatment. Explain how to effectively evaluate treatments to determine if they are evidence based behavior analytic procedure or not, using specific examples of behavior analytic procedures for evaluation.
Explain how you would discuss the importance of using evidence-based strategies with colleagues and the families with whom you work while also respecting other professions and the people involved. Also, consider the many different soft skills needed for these conversations, as multiple skills are often essential and should be discussed. Make sure to discuss the difference in how you will communicate with each party and. use at least one recent scholarly resource to support your communication tactics.
